OpenAI Temporarily Halts New Pro Subscriptions as Astra Demand Surges

OpenAI has temporarily stopped accepting new subscribers to its $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan, citing unprecedented demand for its latest AI model, Astra.

The decision comes just days after Astra began rolling out across OpenAI’s product lineup. The company says the surge in usage is putting significant pressure on its computing infrastructure, with the Pro tier creating the greatest strain on its systems.

Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s product leader responsible for core products including ChatGPT and Codex, announced the temporary suspension on X. He said the company was taking the smallest possible step to maintain service quality while continuing to provide access to as many users as possible.

The pause applies specifically to new Pro subscriptions. OpenAI’s other offerings, including the API as well as the lower-priced Go and Plus plans, remain available.

Astra Demand Pushes OpenAI’s Infrastructure

OpenAI had already warned that it might need to restrict access to the Pro plan if demand for Astra continued to accelerate.

In a post earlier this week, Sottiaux described demand for the new model as unprecedented, saying the company was using every available option to accommodate users. He also emphasized that maintaining a high-quality experience for existing customers would remain the priority.

OpenAI has not disclosed how many people are attempting to sign up for the Pro plan or how many new subscriptions it normally processes each day. It has also not provided a specific timeline for when new Pro registrations will reopen.

The company’s decision suggests that the sudden increase in Astra usage has created a capacity challenge significant enough to outweigh the revenue generated by additional Pro subscriptions, at least temporarily.

A Major Test for OpenAI’s Infrastructure

Astra launched on September 3 and has since been made available across several OpenAI plans, including Pro, Plus, Enterprise and Business accounts.

The model represents OpenAI’s latest push to improve performance in areas such as reasoning, software development and computer use. Those capabilities are also becoming major battlegrounds in the competition between OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and other AI companies.

OpenAI has positioned Astra as a major technological milestone and described it as the beginning of a new phase in the development of AI. That messaging appears to have contributed to the intense interest surrounding the model.

The company recently increased usage limits for Codex users, indicating that the current infrastructure pressure is a relatively recent development rather than a long-standing capacity problem.

Demand vs. Capacity

The temporary suspension highlights one of the biggest challenges facing AI companies: improving model capabilities can rapidly increase demand, but serving those models at scale requires enormous computing resources.

For OpenAI, the situation creates an unusual trade-off. The Pro plan is its most expensive consumer subscription, yet its users are also among the heaviest consumers of computing power. As Astra adoption accelerates, adding more paying customers could therefore increase infrastructure costs faster than subscription revenue.

For now, OpenAI appears to be prioritizing system stability over subscriber growth.

The company has not said when Pro subscriptions will reopen, leaving the timing dependent on how quickly it can expand capacity and absorb the demand generated by Astra.

The episode also illustrates a broader reality of the AI industry: as models become more capable, the challenge is no longer simply getting people to use them. It is building enough infrastructure to handle what happens when everyone wants to use them at once.
