OpenAI Introduces ‘ChatGPT for Teens’ Featuring Study Mode and Enhanced Safety Controls

Following heightened scrutiny and a series of legal challenges regarding the mental health impacts of conversational AI on younger audiences, OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT for Teens—a tailored version of its flagship chatbot designed specifically for underage users. The platform introduces built-in safety guardrails and new academic tools aimed at reducing instances of AI-assisted cheating in schools.

At the core of the educational feature set is Study Mode, a tool engineered to guide students through complex academic concepts using step-by-step prompts rather than delivering direct answers. The system incorporates automated anti-cheating interventions; if a user attempts to generate complete homework solutions, the application displays a reminder encouraging them to switch to Study Mode. Additionally, the interface supports interactive quizzes, visual learning aids, and customizable settings that allow parents to enforce Study Mode by default.

To address ongoing safety and content suitability concerns, OpenAI stated that the new experience incorporates default protections informed by its “Under-18 Principles.” These guidelines, developed in consultation with child development experts, aim to limit exposure to inappropriate or harmful material. The product integrates with OpenAI’s existing suite of parental controls, enabling guardians to monitor usage, adjust privacy parameters, and institute “Quiet Hours.”

Alongside the software rollout, OpenAI announced a collaboration with CodeAI focused on expanding AI literacy among teenagers, complementing its current educational portfolio, which includes ChatGPT for Teachers.

Despite these additions, industry observers note that the efficacy of these safeguards will depend on real-world performance. Digital safety experts point out that adolescent users frequently find workarounds for digital restrictions, leaving open the question of how effectively the platform can prevent circumvention under routine use.
